SC linebacker Rey Maualuga was arrested for allegedly punching a man at a party off campus, a policeman said. Maualuga, an 18 yr old freshman coming off the best game of his career for the top ranked Trojans, was arrested 4 a.m. Last week after the altercation 3 hours earlier, said police spokesman Kevin Maiberger. Maualuga had left the scene, but later turned himself in & was arrested for misdemeanor battery. Maualuga was released a few hours later on his own recognizance. We're treating this situation very seriously," said USC coach Pete Carroll after practice. "He's in essence been knocked down until we find out further what the problem is." Ray Maualuga has declined comment. An arraignment hearing is scheduled for Nov. 22. Since the arrest, Ray, is listed as the Trojans' 2 nd string middle linebacker, & has practiced with the scout squad. Carroll said the 6 ft-2; 245 lbs Maualuga would suit up for Saturday night's game against Stanford, but wouldn't say whether Ray will play against the Cardinals. "I am very disappointed," said Carroll. "Our whole team feels bad." Carroll said the coaching staff has met to discuss the situation & Maualuga has addressed the team as well. "This is a young man who's got some very serious stuff he's dealing with right now," said Carroll. "We really want to help him".
