NHL Hockey History:
In 1917, 4 teams the Montreal Canadians, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators and Toronto Arenas joined together to form the National Hockey League. In that 1 st season, the Wanderers rink burned to the ground and the team was out of the league, never to be heard from again. The Toronto Franchise seemed to have a crisis at first. They went from being the Blue Shirts to the Arenas and the St. Pats a year later before adopting the Maple Leafs in the 1920's. When someone mentions the Pittsburgh Pirates, what's the 1 st thing that comes to mind? A bad baseball team? Sounds ridiculous, in the 1920's there was a team in the NHL known as the Pittsburgh Pirates. In fact, the lettering on one of their uniforms resembled in a broad sense the lettering used by the baseball team in the 1990's.

The biggest innovation in uniforms had to do with the manufacturers' labels. Through the first half of the 1990's, CCM was the exclusive manufacturer of the team jerseys. Then, Starter and Nike got into the mix... However, instead of CCM and Coho each doing 15 teams, CCM did all the home jerseys, and Coho did all the away. Furthermore, the labels were relocated from the right tail of the jersey to directly below the neckline just above the players' nameplate, as pictured to the upper left. I'm no industry expert, but I would garner that the reason behind the different manufacturers for home and away jerseys is so that both logos would be seen in each and every game.

For the 2003-04 seasons, the NHL has done a switcheroo of sorts. For the first time since the 1969-70 seasons , just before yours truly was born -- since teams tended to wear their alternate jerseys at home that meant some teams had to travel with both their dark and their white uniform sets. That meant twice as many jerseys, socks and helmets to lug around. And with airport security the way it is now, that made for a ponderous situation. So to make things easier for travel, the dark uniforms are now the home uniforms in the NHL.

Also by the 2003-04 seasons, the NHL's third jersey program was well into full swing, with over half of the league's 30 teams taking part. With that, the NHL embarked on a new program -- the Vintage Jersey program. Whereas alternate jerseys are worn about 15 times each season per team, the vintage jerseys will be worn only for a few select games per season. Fortunately, the new program is not limited to the Original Six. According to the NHL's official press release, six teams .The Heritage Classic on November 22nd against the Canadians which will be the first ever regular season game played outdoors in NHL history. Also, the Toronto Maple Leafs' alternate jerseys are actually modeled after jerseys they wore in the mid 1960's. Whether those will sport the Vintage logo this season isn't immediately clear.
